Stone’s Throw often relishes in mixing the new with the old but few of the venerable label’s artists sum it up as well as Koushik, the eponymous moniker of Koushik Ghosh. Mixing hazy 60’s nostalgia with new school beats and production, the music occupies a very unique place within a larger nexus of downtempo, soul, classic psychedelic pop, and hip-hop. Intelligent and well executed, the dude is clearly on a mission to meld the most mellow elements from his record collection — the production is replete with harpsichord, strings, acoustic guitars and pretty heavy stench of incense. And there’s singing! Reverb-drenched and drowned out, Koushik twiddles the knobs with intelligence, smartly placing his voice in the background where, absorbed into the dense mix, it becomes an additional instrument. This is dinner party music…if you plan on serving space cakes and mushroom tea for dessert.
